Letter: Solutions - Part 1

Dear Sir:

As promised, this is the first of a series of articles dedicated towards outlining a path for a new governance structure for Trinidad and Tobago. These articles will attempt to outline in some degree of detail a structure that will help improve the quality of life for all our citizens. The objectives are:

• To define our problems and offer solutions.

• Outline initiatives to address crime, education, healthcare, transportation and government services.

• Develop a business model for tourism, agriculture and incorporate same into a long-term strategy for economic recovery and growth.

• Look at possible changes to the constitution to make government less punitive and more service friendly to citizens.

• Immediately turnaround the perception of hopelessness that pervades.

• Place Trinidad and Tobago on a path to security, prosperity and harmony.

The major problem facing Trinidad and Tobago is the lack of visionary, strong leadership. New York City in 1990 was among many unsafe cities in the USA. David Dinkins, who took over as mayor in 1990, started an initiative called “safe city, safe streets” that began the turnaround for New York City. Rudy Giuliani who followed took the fight to the gangs and organized crime and what seemed as an impossible task for decades was completed to the point where New York City is among one of the safest cities in the USA.

Colombia was a place where murders were widespread and the major cities were deemed unsafe for visitors. Under the leadership of Alvaro Uribe, Colombia is now on a path to rapid growth. Crime is down, the guerrilla groups are defeated and the economy is on a path to sustained development.

There are similar stories across the globe where leaders dared to tackle what seemed as impossible tasks and restructured and repositioned their nations towards peace and prosperity. Trinidad and Tobago has such leadership. These series of articles will indicate that we have the personnel with the vision to turn this nation around.

There are two major obstacles to embracing a new leadership model for Trinidad and Tobago. One is the lack of financial support from financiers. Over the years, major party financiers have benefitted from the status quo and invest heavily in supporting the two major political parties. This however can be mitigated if the media publish and evaluate the proposals of alternate leaders in an analytical way.

The second and perhaps most important obstacle we face is the inherent determination to support political organizations based solely on ethnicity. Citizens regardless of ethnicity and political affiliation face similar challenges and share common problems. Both political organizations have had opportunities without financial constraints to turn things around.

Embracing a leadership model committed to unity and not dedicated to the perpetuation of the racial divide is the solution. In my next article, we will look at in depth solutions to crime.

God bless our nation.
